Seafaring and ship building have a very long tradition at the Unterweser. The special charm of the three port towns at the Unterweser – Nordenham, Brake and Elsfleth – lies in the merging of ancient villages in the tide area of the North Sea and modern urban settlement forms, especially in reference to shipping and foreign trade.
Since the 18th-century these port towns were important sea ports and in the second half of the 19th-century home port to over 280 big sailing boats.

Countless trading sailing boats from Weser tub to the schooner to the bark and the full ship were once launched here at the many shipyards and sailed the world's oceans. Some shipyards still produce today wooden sailing ships but also modern freighters and luxurious yachts. Also the dangerous whaling was done from the Unterweser. Along the Weser you will find residential estates that were founded by whalers, fishermen and sailors.

For the canals, waterways and sluices of the widely ramified irrigation and drainage systems in the Wesermarsh, ships with a very low draft were needed, the so-called Dielenschiffe. At the replica 'Hanni', which berths at the historical harbour in Absen, guided tours are offered to the Weser island 'Strohauser Plate', which is a protected area as well as trips around the Plate and along the Weser.
Other lovely yacht ports and sports boats landing stages are located throughout the Wesermarsh, a paradise for sailors and motorboat navigators.

Elsfleth is today still the home port of the majestic sailing vessel the
'Großherzogin
Elisabeth'
, also lovingly called "Lissy". Apart from day and weekend trips it is also possible to enjoy longer sails on the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The three-mast gaff schooner is used for the seamen training and as a registry office. The Seefahrtschule Elsfleth is equipped with the most modern navigation techniques among others a manoeuvre basin, planetarium and the, at present, most modern ship's navigation simulator and offers also sightseeing.
